Case Study: Investment in New Packaging and Labeling Equipment Responds to Client Demand for Gummy Vitamins
Gummy multivitamins were originally marketed towards children. Recently they gained popularity among an adult demographic as a simpler alternative to OTC (over-the-counter) supplements. According to market research firm Fact.MR, adults now account for 60% of gummy vitamin consumption. This trend is expected to continue, with a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 6.5% reaching $9.3 billion in sales globally by 2026.
WDSrx collaborates with supplement manufacturers to accommodate their packaging and labeling demands. Recently, a prominent national gummy multivitamin client experienced a sharp increase in demand for their product.
Working with WDSrx, a customized solution was developed that increased production in a short time period supporting the client’s continued business growth.
Gummy supplements can present several packaging issues that may not come up when dealing with conventional medications such as capsules or tablets. Gummies tend to have a sticky residue that can cause equipment issues when passing through a pill dispenser.
Advanced technology for packaging gummies exists but equipment is complex, expensive and difficult to maintain. WDSrx needed to immediately support our multivitamin client in order for them to satisfy their retailers and wholesalers increasing product demand.
Close collaboration between teams at WDSrx and the client company was a significant component contributing to project success. The WDSrx leadership team located a gummy equipment manufacturer that produced a packaging and labeling line exclusively for gummy production. The equipment was manufactured according to WDSrx and client specifications for optimal performance and quality requirements.
“This project combined our client manufacturing and marketing knowledge with our own expertise in packaging and labeling to develop a solution for short and long-term success in the marketplace,” according to WDSrx President Adam Runsdorf.
The equipment was designed and manufactured with an expedited time frame and imported in several large containers to the WDSrx headquarters location in Boca Raton, Florida.
Prior to installation the production suites were reconfigured and refurbished to house the new equipment. The ceiling was raised in a production room to fit the height of the machine. When completed, the production line was re-assembled, validated and qualified for operation.
Starting with the initial consultation with the client, equipment sourcing, design, manufacture, delivery, installation and qualification spanned a period of four months.
This new, high volume equipment solves any mishaps that can occur because of the material of gummy supplements. Mitigating these technical issues increases efficiency and lowers costs for gummy multivitamin manufacturers.
WDSrx increased the capacity of gummy production in excess of client requirements in anticipation of continued future growth. The client satisfied demand for product from their retail and wholesale accounts and maintained their position in this fast-growing market segment.
Plans are underway at WDSrx to expand gummy packaging and labeling capacity into additional geographic markets to serve multiple clients and add efficiency, convenience and cost-savings.
Transportation Management: The WDSrx Transportation Management Department that manages import and customs brokerage services arranged for international shipment of the high-value production equipment from overseas to Boca Raton, Florida.
Warehousing and Distribution: WDSrx warehouse locations support the flow of raw materials and components that supply the production department. After filling and labeling, finished products are stored within the warehouse and shipped to trading partners. WDSrx has a comprehensive range of warehouse and distribution services to fulfill client expectations.
Packaging and Labeling: WDSrx packages and labels oral solid dose prescription and over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements. Packaging lines are operated by experienced technicians. Once the new packaging equipment was installed, production technicians were trained to safely operate the machinery to assure regulatory compliance and quality control.
Quality Assurance: All equipment used at WDSrx must comply with regulatory compliance guidelines. Prior to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) training, the production line was inspected and validated. SOP’s are made and enforced by the on-site Quality Assurance Department to assure the safety of our employees and the integrity of the product being handled. The entire Production Department received extensive SOP training preceding the large gummy packaging and labeling project brought onto WDSrx by a prominent national gummy multivitamin client.
